Old Town Pondscape - - Good thing I always pack my camera because I didn't expect photo opportunities when I took the dogs to the Old Town tide flats for a walk. The weather was changing fast and offered lots of great views! This is looking East as the sun was going down in the West. There was a lot of spot lighting on the peaks and the tidal ponds were very still so I took advantage of opportunities. More to come!

Week 7: Pond Magic

The magic in this drawing for #spiritsandmortals is the fact that there’s something about it I don’t like BUT I don’t know what it is ✨✨✨

Ronald Thom, Massey College Masterplan, buildings and courtyard (1963) Toronto, Canada
Perhaps not so unusually for 1957 Thom became a registered architect after being apprenticed at Thompson, Berwick & Pratt, and also a partner there, after his graduation from art school in 1947. In the early 1960s he established the Toronto office of Thompson, Berwick & Pratt, and won the competition to design and built Massey College. In 1963 he established his own practice, R.J. Thom & Associates, I assume after Massey College had been completed. The buildings are a combination of massed brick and delicate concrete and stonework, whilst the courtyard they enclose is a finely gridded space based upon the paving units used to further enclose three irregular laws with tall trees set into them, an irregular pond and a lineal moat pond where the paving becomes a causeway. The Oxbridge model is delicately remodelled here. Thom was also an enthusiast for the concept of the ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ or ‘Total work of art’, but I feel, took this to also mean the way the spaces were organised, and this simple, yet highly modulated courtyard must be the crowning glory of this design.

Today was the end of a really fun job!! This was all low-lying bush that held water and wasn't really useable a month and a half ago. I stripped the trees and roots with a 22 ton excavator and stacked the topsoil in a wind row. Then we were able to dig that pond ten feet deep and generate enough material (approximately 50-60 tri axle loads) to make a nice rough Grade and let it dry. A few days ago we went back with the new D3K and a packer and recut and packed the rough Grade multiple times to achieve compaction then we flipped the topsoil back and let it dry for a few days. Earlier today we took the D3C back and put some granulars in and dressed up the topsoil just before it started to rain(talk about luck!). #D3C #Caterpillar #D3K #heavyequipment #gravel #bmooreongrade #lotgrading #pond #Dirtyartist #Dozerthings 🚜💨🤘🏻👨🏻‍🎨
