How to get pistols - with crappy ancle mobility and weak ass legs - no pun intended 😀 i always wanted to be able to do proper pistols - squatting below parallel, without grabbing my toes and bouncing through the moves. On 04.01.19 (video 5) i started doing pistol progressions 1-2 times per week. First on a box, so my food could dangle down) with a medball to a) make sure I hit depth and b) I wouldn’t fall on my butt. I did 4x10 and almost died the day after 😬😀 over the weeks I progressed down from the box and up the reps until now, 6 weeks later, doing 6x20 with a band for depth-feedback. Just for fun?! 😛🤪🙃 Yes and no! Sure it’s a fun challenge and it feels like a child’s game. But behind the fun, there’s a heck of a lot of balance, concentration, muscles engagement and mobility involved. And that’s with any exercise that you do! You don’t realize how much of a specific muscle you use until you get hurt and can’t use that muscle, right?! My point is, move your body! Anyway you want! 🤸🏼‍♂️🧘🏽‍♂️🏊🏻‍♀️ Walk your dog, play with your kids, use the stairs instead of elevators, try a new sport, etc. Find something active that’s enjoyable for you, because it might seem like you are not doing much, but there’s a lot of behind the scene happening in your body to make that movement happen. Truly will miss this extra time after the wods next week once school and work are back on for now though I enjoy having time practice skills and work on mobility. First single arm OH squat and then pistols. For some reason I decided to finish of with 5k treadmill run - which I have to be honest was the most boring things ever - give me an outdoor run any day!! Now time to take little monkey bouldering 🐒 Happy hump day y‘all 🐪 *

I’m not taking away the fact that I train hard & have a lot of strength (& determination); but I do feel I have @harrietelizabethyoga & her awesome Yoga classes to thank here 🧘🏽‍♀️🙏🏽💪🏼 Her Hatha Flow sessions has taught me to find a deeper connection with my body; gaining flexibility; increased mobility & balance. Each class is a new challenge & I love practising wherever I can. One of my big goals was to get a pistol squat and guess what I finally got tonight!!!! Now I need to work on keeping my chest up & perfecting it... and working on my left one 😂 & then Lensie and I did a little shoulder work early in the night as well.

One of my big goals was to get a pistol squat and guess what I finally got tonight!!!! Now I need to work on keeping my chest up & perfecting it... and working on my left one 😂 & then Lensie and I did a little shoulder work early in the night as well.

Build speed and strength with these exercises -leg finisher 4 rounds: 10 pistol squats (50lbs) -> 12 weighted box jumps (25lb dumbbells)
-low ATG box squat: slow decent with a rest at the bottom. Stay tight and maintain a good position coming up. THIS DRILL IS GREAT FOR THOSE LEARNING TO DO ASS TO GRASS SQUATS 👍

Power Yoga everyday 🙂. Finally figured out how to do pistol squats. I think i had the strength from cycling, but had to adjust the mobility and also manuever around a big mental block. During this summer's cycling trip to Montreal, I had a long period of bad knee pain, which pointed to me by my buddy, was caused by an incorrect adjustment of the seat height. I fixed the height of the seat midway and the pain stoped. For some reason this memory of the pain stuck with me. And now, recently when i started trying pistol squats, this reminder of the pain was always in the back of my head. Putting all of your weight on one knee, in case "something happens" and it gives out, i have no control to stop it. Some time had to pass for me to analyze the situation, trust fully in my knee and comit to the move. Small victories, but important. Sometimes you have to slow down... and sometimes you have to push through 👊

Just trying some new things (after half an hour of HIIT). Did not feel my heel coming up so much on those TRX pistol squats. Oops. But apparently I can do one unassisted dip now. Haven’t been practicing them but that is definitely a new development.

Are you super strong in your lower body but still can't seem to do a Pistol squat?⁣⁣⠀
•
One of the major reasons why some people can't do a pistol squat but have the strength is due to the inflexibility in the ankles (achilles). Here is the MOST effective mobility exercises you can do to help you get a PISTOL SQUAT!⁣⁣⠀
•
1. Use a foam roll/myofascial tool on the back of your ankle. Hold on trigger point that's most sensitive for 20-30 secs (don't just roll it out back and forth).⁣⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
2. Get into this pose and hold static stretch for 20-30 seconds. Feel stretch on (tibialis anterior) front of ankle ⁣⠀
⁣⁣⠀
3. For this static stretch, try to have knee joint go pass your 1st and 2nd toe while keeping heel flat on surface! And feel the stretch on (achilles tendon) back of ankle.⁣⁣⠀

I can guarantee that working on these exercises will get you closer to that 1 legged squat!⁣⁣⠀

Today was a pretty amazing day all around- to top things off I put 100lbs overhead for 3 solid OHS and got 5 sets of ‘weighted’ pistols.... Oh leg day. Didn't get a ton of sleep but still got up to do this. Gotta love pre-workouts when you're tired like that.

Pretty solid workout. Went heavy on deads and hip thrusts. My nordic curl video made me realize my hamstrings have fat on them 😂 I need to get back onto a better diet!

I also practiced handstands for almost a half hour. My balance is getting better and my holds are going for slightly longer. Progress! Check my story out if you wanna see that.

Lets get into the videos:

Videos 1, 2 & 3 are all on deadlifts. I went a bit heavier today. 365 went up slow as hell! But it went up, and matches an old PR of 2x body weight. Definitely felt good to put that up again.

Video 4 is on Pistol Squat to Sit to Up. I saw a video of this on IG and figured why not try it out. Left leg almost didn't want to cooperate.

Videos 5 & 6 are on Hip Thrusts. There are a couple different sets in video 5 and then my failed attempt at 575 is video 6. 3 reps at 505 is a PR according to my workout app.

Video 7 is on Standing Calf Raises. Rail is for balance checking only. Prefer single as the burn gets pretty intense on the later reps.

Video 8 is on Nordic Curls. This video tells me I need to loose some fat on my thighs 😂 not exactly my favorite video but 5 reps is decent. I need to mix in regular hamstrign curls to work a larger ROM.

This year I’m more focused on unilateral exercises to achieve strength, flexibility, balance and overall body control. Nobody has perfect symmetry between both sides of the body. In this video, there is an obvious disparity. I started with my weakest side so I can pay more attention to it. I haven’t been in the gym as much due to an injury, but I’m back! 💪🏽
