What if you could escape city life every weekend? Well, If wishes were horses. But when I am short of time and still Imagining open spaces, fresh air, and beautiful birds, I imagine Dighal as the 1st option. It's a beautiful village nestled in Haryana which is full of warm hearts, stupendous bhuna jeera chaach, many darling raptors and Rakesh Ahlawat as the BEST guide ever. I guess I started visiting Dighal in 2012 or 13 and I don't remember a single birding session wherein I failed to bring back any keepers. The land has always been kind to me & yesterday was no different. We spent some good 9 hours in search of a warbler and a bittern but they both decided not to show up. Now I could easily see the session making a shift on a scale from a low activity to a no activity day in my Dighal diaries, but then hope is something that I feed myself the most.
A casual scan and our eyes rested on a Crested Serpent Eagle perched far on top of a pole, but only if I could frame it from half of the existing distance and certainly there were no means to go that close and we felt helpless. Sitting on a manja(Wooden bed) we were devouring the giant, crisp n flaky samosas that Rakesh got us for the lunch but still keeping an eye on the Serpent slayer.
And not so surprisingly the boy flew down. We quickly grabbed our gears and started watching the drama, the drama of life and death. The boy clawed on snake (much-anticipated). But since the raptor was way beyond our reach, it made no sense to release the shutter. Just a few seconds down the line the crows started mobbing the eagle and he decided to fly away with his prized catch giving us an opportunity to manage another keeper and a positive shift on the scale.
