Full permission to be disappointed... . You can be forgiven for thinking that I shouldn't have got lost today as I came down from Wansfell Pike. After all, I just completed a beginner's navigation course on Saturday. . However, there is only so much a course can teach - the rest is up to me to make the right decisions. . Today I decided to go for a 'quick walk' up Wansfell - just straight up and down from Troutbeck. I didn't have a proper map (just a little printed drawing from the hostel) and I didnt have a compass. . I could see the summit and I figured I'd just reverse the journey to come back down. . Big mistake, even though I thought I had sight of Nanny's lane, I was wrong. After summiting, I climbed down the mountain with a skip and a jump, walked over to what I thought was my original route, and was shocked to find that it wasn't Nanny's lane - I don't know who's lane it was but it definitely wasn't Nanny's. . With dread I realised that I'd totally misjudged it and was lost. Thanks to Google maps on my phone I got back to the car safe. Thanks to my arrogance, I nearly didn't. . Lesson learned, one nav course doesn't make anyone the expert. . Anyway, it was a bloody good course with @mammutmountainschooluk and I pledge to use the skills I learned from this day forward! . The most immediately apparent aspect of SAS training is that it is likely more physically demanding than any other experience you've had thus far. 1) Become a member of Her Majesty's Armed Forces. 2) Be a healthy male between 18 and 32 years of age. 3) Have 3 months of experience and 39 months of service remaining. 4) When ready, file an AGAI (Army General Administrative Instruction). 5) Pass the initial screening tests. 6) Complete the Special Forces Briefing Course. 7) Pass the Fitness and Navigation phase. 8) Pass the Initial Continuation Training phase. 9) Pass the Jungle Training phase. 10) Pass the Escape and Evasion phase. 11) Withstand Tactical Questioning (TQ) tests. 12) Enter Continuation Training. Only 10% of candidates make it this far. It will still take lots of time and effort at this point to still get the coveted beret. 🇬🇧 Get in shape and start doing compass and land nav exercises. It has been an absolute pleasure spending the weekend with someone who was keen to refresh her navigation skills. We covered everything from grid references and map scales to covering newer topics like aiming off, attack points, leapfrogging and boxing. The weather was more changeable than the photo suggests with a few hail showers interspersed with the periods of sunshine. A really enjoyable weekend! Today I went on a Navigation Skills course, and learned how to read maps and use a compass without the aid of technology. I can now find my way out of a thick mist or whiteout in the hills and mountains of Scotland with relative confidence! Today we've been out in the New Forest pre walking some routes ready for a week long corporate walking event in March... there's always loads of preparation needed when planning new routes but it has to be done as part of our safety procedures. Went out with Jade @wild.mountain.instruction for a little recce of the #NantlleRidge, ready for some group walks we are doing in the next few months. One is open for anyone for £45 on the 23rd March. Give me a shout if you fancy it. The other is private guiding for Mick @trekkingandoutdoors. Looking forward to both days. This really is one of the best walks in #Eryri.

It is often said that by the time a map is available to use, it is out of date due to the "real-world moving on" since the data to create the map was gathered. There may also be some 'built in inaccuracies' due to the challenge of trying to visualise important details and features in a cramped space on a map, this gives the perception that your map may be 'lying to you'. This is often referred to as 'displacement' or 'displacement of detail'.
