I promised I’d post a follow-up on the acid preparation that I’ve been testing out for the first time on a 3” fossilised section of Jurassic Ichthyosaur jaw. I’m now up to about 18hrs on-off of diluted acetic acid exposure and the limestone matrix has dissolved really well. Since my last update a few days ago, a good few more teeth have been exposed that were recessed deep into this jaw. The acid has worked its magic to remove the matrix but preserve these delicate teeth. I could of course do more to this but it feels right to leave it there. If the teeth were more robust and larger you can allow the acid to work it’s away around to create a 3D effect but these teeth are a little too small for that so I’ll leave it be. More details on the process are in my previous post. Swipe left to see the before and after. #acid #aceticacid #acidpreparation #fossilprep #fossilpreparation #ichthyosaur #ichthyosaurs #jawsection #lymeregis #jurassic #jurassiccoast #teeth #fossilhunting #fossilhunter #fossil #fossils #fossilised #fossilsofinstagram #fossillovers #fossiladdict #palaeoart #paleoart #palaeontology #paleontology #extinct #extinction #preparation #limestone #geology @the_wobbly_fossiler

Proof of what storms can do to the beach! 😱 🌊 These pictures were taken on very wet, rainy days after storm surges ⛈ The surges had literally ripped up tons of Jet Rock Slate slabs which in turn exposed loads of ammonite nodules (rocks) 😍😍🤤 We broken all of these nodules sat in front of my younger brother @01shaesmith10 and some of them contained gorgeous ammonites - a couple of which were turned into our favourite Golden Cannon Balls 😍 Imagine if you received one of these for Valentine’s Day 🌹🤩 #valentinesday #valentines #valentine #animals #wildlife #history #ammonite #ammonites #dinosaur #palaeontology #minerals #paleontology #sea #summer #whitby #earth #beautiful #dorset #geology #charmouth #lymeregis #beauty #yorkshire #coast #ichthyosaur #beach #jurassic #crystal #fossils #fossil

I'm flipper flippin for #fossilflipthursday 😃 I found this partial ichthyosaur 🐬 paddle on the Jurassic Coast of Dorset UK 🇬🇧 a few years ago. This is a partial front paddle with a small part of the humerous still attached. Although I found many pieces of this beast, I was not fortunate enough to find the missing parts of this paddle ☹

The world's oldest vomit was discovered on this day in 2002 by a team led by Prof. ‪Peter Doyle‬ in a quarry in Peterborough, UK. It was found to be the 160 million year old fossilised vomit of an ichthyosaur - a large, fish-like marine reptile 🤮🦈 The fascinating prehistoric puke could provide an insight to the feeding habits of ichthyosaurs.
The example of dinosaur vomit we have here at Guinness World Records shown in these pictures isn't this record-holder, but is quite similar and almost as old.
Does is smell? No, it has no smell at all, thanks to millions of years and fossilisation!
The arrangement of belemnite shells in the vomit suggest that the reptiles may have eaten the shelled creatures whole, and then regurgitated the shells, much in the same way an owl eats a mouse.
Prof. ‪Peter Doyle‬ said at the time: "It is highly unlikely that these shells passed through the ichthyosaur's intestines and were excreted as droppings because they would have damaged the soft tissue of the reptile's internal organs. "The only alternative is that the shells were vomited out in much the same way that modern-day sperm whales regurgitate the indigestible beaks of squid." “I have been confused for a while that we found the arm hooks of belemnites in ichthyosaur stomachs, but not their shells. But vomiting explains it,” _________________________________________________

I absolutely love this Jurassic Ichthyosaur specimen which is in the collection of the Grant Museum of Zoology in London. It may not be a complete skeleton, but the skull and front paddles of this Juvenile marine reptile are incredibly well preserved. Here you can see another example of a rare find of vertebrates in our hettangian deposits.

It is a piece of an ichthysaur jaw (lower jaw or mandible) ... unfortunately only a piece and there are no teeth inside the jaw. What a pity!

I found it while I was preparating an nearby ammonite, so it should have been a little larger. Now I am more careful when I split these fossiliferous limestones, not only expecting ammonites!

Length: 5cm
Age: middle hettangian

This very rare and special PREGNANT Ichthyosaur fossil that is believed to have died while giving birth, as there is a baby coming out of the birth canal, and two more waiting for their turn. An Ichthyosaur is a marine reptile (like a Plesiosaur), but they are much more fish-like. With fossil evidence for features like live birthing and, more recently, a form of blubber, they are sort of the dolphin of the Mesozoic era. This Ichthyosaur is likely a Stenopterygius from Germany. Can any Ichthyosaur experts such as @dean_r_lomax weigh in?

I’ll admit that I’ve not done a lot of fossil preparation with the use of acid before so I thought I’d test it out on this 3” section of Jurassic Ichthyosaur jaw bone (you might recognise this James @the_wobbly_fossiler). The basic principle is that with the careful use of diluted acetic acid (5%), any limestone matrix will dissolve away leaving the mineralised fossil bone and teeth behind. That’s the theory but you have to be careful that the acid over time doesn’t degrade the teeth and bone as well. So with some great advice from the expert Mike Marshall @yorkshire.coast.fossils I gave this a go to see if I could expose some teeth hidden in the jaw section. First stage was to protect the exposed bone with thick paraloid. Then for further protection, a coating of candle wax. Once fully protected, the jaw was ready to put into the diluted acetic acid for a couple of hours. When you put it into the solution, the acid immediately starts to attack the limestone which produces bubbling carbon dioxide. After 2hrs I removed the jaw and put it in water for about 3hrs. I then repeated the process again. The final photos are after about 8hrs of acid prep and I’m not done yet. It’s a slow process but I’m taking it carefully. A few more teeth have now been exposed but I actually don’t think there’s many teeth preserved in this section. Thought it was worth sharing though. #acid #acidpreparation #fossilprep #fossilpreparation #fossil #fossils #fossilhunter #fossilhunting #jurassic #ichthyosaur #ichthyosaurs #jaw #palaeoart #paleoart #palaeontology #paleontology #extinction #extinction #aceticacid #limestone #chemicals #chemicalreaction #fossillovers #fossiladdict #jurassiccoast #marinereptile

Here’s one of my favourite shale-preserved finds from last year 🦈 It’s the bones from an Ichthyosaur! An extinct marine reptile of the Mesozoic specialized for aquatic life 🌊🐋🦀 At the top left of the slab you can see an intricate pattern of bones, this is actually one of the creature’s flippers 🦴 There are also jaw segments, but they’re in pieces because the creature was attacked either before or after death! 💀 Swipe alone for some extra content! 😉 #Ichthyosaur #nature #fossil #fossils #ancient #animals #art #ammonite #ammonites #dinosaur #awesome #minerals #paleontology #sea #news #whitby #earth #geologist #dorset #geology #charmouth #palaeontology #jurassic #yorkshire #coast #instagram #beach #stone #rock

#Ichthyologist #ichthyosaur #reptile #paleoart #paleontology #seareptile #fish #saltwater #sea #draw #art #science #animal #prehistoric #swimmer #evolution #seareptile #jurassic #triassic #mesozoic #era #hunter #jurassicworld #jurassicpark #dinosaur #l #t #i #s

Here is the rest of the ichthyosaur fossil I posted the coracoids from earlier. This is from Charmouth, Dorset UK and was found about eight years ago. It is around 196 million years old.

These odd looking fossil bones are the coracoids of a Jurassic ichthyosaur. These make up part of the shoulder girdle in most living vertebrates (with the exception of most mammals including us) and in the case of ichthyosaurs form a key part of the structural support for the front fins (paddles). They have a fairly unique and recognisable shape in Jurassic ichthyosaurs. This is part of my first ever ichthyosaur fossil find I made many years ago currently on display at the University of Bristol. To the left of the coracoids is a humerus, the bone found at the base of the front limb that in humans forms the upper arm bone.

Here's a clump of ichthyosaur 🐬 paddle bones I found on the Jurassic 🦖 Coast of Dorset UK 🇬🇧 for #fossilflipthursday this is just a few of the many little bones that would have made up a complete paddle.

Crazy long lines at the plasma donation center. 😬 I’ve built too much of my day around this to back out now though, so I’m glad I happened to have a couple great library books in the car! I like that first page in the @rextooth_studios book. #brontosaurusisback !!! I love the #MaryAnning book too; it’s a cute little chapter book about her early life and first #ichthyosaur #fossil find. I like the @melissa.castrillon illustrations, too! 🦕🦖🐬@maryanningrocks @mary_annings_revenge

Skull of the ichthyosaur Leptonectes tenuirostris (spec. no NHMUK PV R3001) - a fish-shaped marine reptile from the Early Jurassic of the UK. Note the bony ring which supported the huge eyeball that probably allowed this ichthyosaur to dive deep in pursuit of its prey. This is just one of dozens of ichthyosaur specimens form the Natural History Museums collections, not displayed to the public. Natural history museum collections are an important source of information about past and present biodiversity.

Echo. Sharp, deadly, and elusive, Echo is built for speed. The large extensions on Echo are used to confuse his enemies and prey, either making them confused or making Echo himself look bigger. With a long thin snout perfect for cutting through the waters, Echo is an above average all rounder with the ability to counter shade, meaning if you see him from above he blends in with the depths and if you see him from below he blends in with the skies. He’s also extremely fast, although not as fast as Lupis and Ripple, he can outswim normal fast sea creatures. He’s also deadly at combat, with a surprisingly strong jaw strength. Many say messing with Echo can be playing with your life, and some don’t even live to tell the tale. #Enterthedragons #temnodontosaurus #ichthyosaur #prehistoric #echo #echothedolphin
