By adulthood (and often long before), the joy of movement is lost for so many of us. What can parents do to help our kids keep the joy alive as they grow?

We’re all living in this environment that glorifies “exercise” while at the same time offering more and more reasons to be sedentary (lots of screens, lots of driving, long days sitting at work or school.) It’s the same environment that tells us to diet while offering endless amounts of food.

You may be familiar with Ellyn Satter’s Division of Responsibility for feeding. In a nutshell, parents decide what to serve and when, and lead by example. The child decides what to eat, and how much, from what is provided. Pressure to eat more or less, or to eat certain foods only backfires, resulting in kids who are more picky or demanding, and less able to eat the amounts that are right for them.

I think we could discuss a similar division of responsibility for movement. As a parent, it's my job to provide opportunities for the kids to be active - outdoor time, park trips, a bit of equipment (a bike, some balls), exposure to activities (hiking, sports, etc) But it's their job to decide what they'll do. Given the opportunity, kids are pretty good at finding the right level of challenge for themselves and keeping it fun.

But push them too hard, and they'll either get hurt or push back and want to do nothing. And If all I provide is indoor time and constant access to screens (plus modeling sedentary behavior), it won't be long before they lose that inner drive to be active.

Kids who are given the freedom to choose how much to eat will be more in tune with how foods make them feel, and more likely to be competent eaters as they grow. I think kids who are given the space and opportunity to move as they wish will have the tools to keep moving.

From a study done for @nhsenglandldn in 2017 there were 617 thousand NHS admissions where obesity was a factor.

1 in 5 children in yr 6 and 1 in 10 reception age were classified as obese. We need to do more.

No-one is saying you suddenly need to go to the gym 5 times a week and run everyday. Start small. If you don’t do anything go for a small walk twice a week and build on that. Track your steps with @fitbit And aim to increase your daily amount by 500.

The more we move the healthier we become. It’s so important we teach our children and the younger generations how vital staying fit and active is. There are so many opportunities to get kids involved in moving @tootingbecathleticstrack @playballwandsworth or just even do some fun family races in your back garden.

Brilliant morning at @clydebankcommunitysportshub watching some of the Scotland first Rugby Team and Scotland under 20 squad train. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏉.
My kids had a great time and it was a great way to encourage lots of young people into sport! @alastairkellock was a great host, amazing with the kids. All the players stayed for over an hour making sure everyone got their strips/books/balls signed despite the freezing cold weather.
Big thanks to all involved.

Brilliant morning at @clydebankcommunitysportshub watching some of the Scotland first Rugby Team and Scotland under 20 squad train. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏉. My kids had a great time and it was a great way to encourage lots of young people into sport! @alastairkellock was a great host, amazing with the kids. All the players stayed for over an hour making sure everyone got their strips/books/balls signed despite the freezing cold weather. Big thanks to all involved.

For today's #waldorfmovementmondays post, let's focus on the Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex (TLR). We all have three invisible midlines.  Left to right, top to bottom and front to back. The TLR deals with our front to back midline.  Proper integration gives babies the ability to get up and off the floor and hold our bodies against gravity.  A child with a fully integrated TLR has strong neck and core muscles that helps them manage the weight their head and limbs create against the pull of gravity.  It also is a strong player in building our vestibular sense, our sense of body geography. ❄ Signs that the TLR is not properly integrated include poor balance and coordination, motion sickness, fidgeting when seated, always adjusting their position, have difficulty following directional or movement instructions, and tire easily.  These children are literally feeling the pull of gravity on their body because their core muscles are not strong enough to hold their body.  Standing for any length of time actually seems difficult!  Raising a hand is actually tiring! These babes are just worn out from all of gravity's darn pull! They will lean, sprawl, prop themselves up on anything or anyone.  These are often the children who are seen hanging off parents and sprawling across their desk. ❄ Another way to see if a child has this reflex retained is to play superman.  Lie on the floor, on your belly and lift head to look forward, arms and legs raised.  If your child cannot lift up both arms and/or legs, or has issues lifting head, than this reflex might not be integrated. ❄ So what do I do if I think my child still holds this reflex? The superman of course!! This is a wonderful exercise for strengthening the core and neck muscles, and repetitions will eventually work that reflex into integration. ❄ 👇👇👇

This is Amber smashing out some 7kg slam balls at the weekend. What she lacks in form she makes up in laughter and enthusiasm and we welcome that.
We will work on her form but try and keep that joy.
What we are aiming for is a lovely deep squat to reach and scoop up the slam ball, roll it up in towards the chest with elbows tucked under and then a good thrust with the hips before slamming the ball into the floor. It’s a really dynamic move and will be great alongside her football training. 
We like to include this as part of a home circuit for Amber and Edward because it’s FUN.... who can’t get the giggles or get aggressive about slamming a ball....

Lately, I have been learning about working memory. When your child struggles with this, they typically are struggling with academics as well.

We have been creating obstacle courses to challenge working memory and to learn the names of money .
